"G.B." Gregory Bryant Holt, Jr.

GREGORY BRYANT “G.B.” HOLT, JR., age 83, of Leasburg, NC passed away on Saturday morning, August 17, 2019 at Duke Regional Hospital.

Mr. Holt was born July 28, 1936 in Person County, NC, son of the late Gregory Bryant Holt, Sr. & the late Lucille Fuller Holt and was husband of 64 years to Hilda Ledbetter Holt who survives.  He was a self-employed mechanic, a member of Leasburg United Methodist Church, and a veteran of the NC Army National Guard. 

G.B. was a fixture in the Leasburg community, having lived there since early childhood.  Whether he was at the shop visiting with close friends who stopped by or riding the roads in his unofficial job of “Big Boy’s Surveillance”, he was well-known and loved.  He lived and breathed NASCAR at all levels, having driven race cars at short tracks in North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina from 1956-64.  Person County Speedway and Trico, local tracks at the time, were his favorites because he got to race against such local stars as Sandy Stigall, Buck & Larry Thomas, Mack Mangum and Clayton Shull.  They, along with Grady Stewart, became lifelong friends.  They always argued about who was the best!  G.B. owned and operated Holt’s Service Station in Leasburg from 1961 until the late 1980s when his son, Danny, began operating Holt’s Garage.  Of course, G.B. was always still the boss!  He was an active member of Leasburg UMC, always looking forward to covered dish meals served there, and you could count on him leading the line!  If food was served, G.B. would be there.  He loved to eat, but he enjoyed the fellowship with others much more. 

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter-in-law, Lyn Dixon Holt, three grandchildren, Bryant Dixon Holt & wife, Beth, Gregory Thomas Holt, Sarah Jie Ledbetter, two great grandchildren, Briggs Bryant Holt, and Dixon Roy Holt.

In addition to his parents Mr. Holt is preceded in death by a son, Danny Bryant Holt.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2019 at Leasburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Pearce officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home, 8978 Leasburg Road, Leasburg, NC.

Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Dixon, Warren Dixon, Bobby Fulcher, Terry Fuller, George Henderson, Bryant Holt, Greg Holt, and Bill Turner.
