Donald Brooks Sherman, age 62, passed away on New Year’s Day to join his Heavenly Father and his parents June Hobson Sherman and Cecil Brooks Sherman. Don was born in Alamance County on March 30, 1958, and graduated 12th in his class of 363 from Walter Williams High School. He went on to graduate with honors from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Accounting.
Don entered on duty as a Special Agent of the FBI in 1990 following a successful business career where he developed some retail businesses in the SE United States. As Don put it at the time, “I want to do something more important than just making money.”
Following graduation from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Don was assigned to the Dallas, Texas Field Office (DFO) of the FBI, where he would spend the rest of his 22-year career until his medically necessitated retirement in 2013.
In 1992, Don was selected to return to the FBI Academy for a period of intense training to qualify as an Undercover Agent (UCA), later serving in several extraordinarily successful undercover investigations. As a result of his expertise, Don was named the Undercover Coordinator for the DFO, in addition to being named the Crisis Management Coordinator for DFO. He also served as a member of the DFO elite Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) from 1993-2000.
To quote one of Don’s fellow Agents in the Bureau, “Don was considered to be an outstanding investigator, and he excelled in Public Corruption matters where he helped develop evidence to convict numerous high-profile elected and appointed officials. He received numerous awards for his efforts.”
Don was the recipient of The Attorney General’s Award for Investigative Excellence; The Executive Office for the United States Attorneys Director’s Award for Superior Performance by a Litigative Team in 2014; The Robert Gemberling Investigator of the Year Award in 2009; and The Golden Eagle Award by the United States Attorney’s Office, for the Northern District of Texas in 2011.
Don took a break from the FBI from 2000 to 2002 when he accepted Jesus into his life and worked with Zig Ziglar, a well-known Author and Motivational Speaker, and his company to spread the good news of Jesus. Don became a faithful member of Prestonwood Baptist Church. After coming to our Lord and Savior, Don made it his mission to tell his friends and everyone about what Jesus had done in his life and how they could know him too. Don will be remembered as a Christian Man, standing on the principles of the Word of God and telling people about how to know his Lord Jesus Christ.
Don authored a book entitled, Dear Sam, How to Live with Courageous Confidence which he dedicated to his only son, his beloved Samuel. He is survived by Samuel, his sister Lisa Sherman Tunstall, and his Niece Audrey Tunstall.
A private funeral was held in Roxboro and Don will be buried there on land owned by his family for generations. A Memorial Service will be planned for later in the year.
