ERNEST TAFT DIXON. age 86, of Roxboro, NC died Sunday morning, August 21, 2022 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Dixon was born August 6, 1936 in Person County, NC, son of the late Eddie Taft & Virginia Naomi Saunders Dixon and was husband of 65 years to Mable Irene Knight Dixon who survives. He was retired from the Person County Sheriff’s Department after 20 years of service where he served as Sheriff for 16 years. Prior to being elected Sheriff, he was a deputy, and prison guard. Upon retirement as Sheriff, he served with the Caswell County Sheriff’s Department for nine months and served as a State jail inspector for 13 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in the 11th Airborne, was a veteran of the Army National Guard, and was a lifetime member of Longhurst United Methodist Church.
Ernest was a scout leader, member of the FOP Lodge #74, and member of American Legion. He enjoyed making pine straw baskets and spending time with his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Kimberly S. Dixon, Kenneth W. Dixon & wife, Deanna, all of Roxboro, NC, five grandchildren, Candice Barbour, Matthew Parrott, Jonathan Hyde, Boston Dixon, Timothy Nichols, eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa Owens, Addison Parrott, Dylan Parrott, Naomi Hyde, Kathleen Nichols, Sabastian Dixon, Jonah King, and Harper King.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Dixon is preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Wayne Dixon and sister, Elaine Dixon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August, 25, 2022 in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Amanda Dixson officiating. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends and guests from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Dixon, Boston Dixon, Timothy Nichols, Matthew Parrott, Jonathan Hyde, and Steven Barbour. Honorary pallbearers will be Dwight Dixon, Travis Dixon, Taft Dixon, Colby Owens, and Jay Parrott.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Longhurst United Methodist Church, 265 Providence Road, Roxboro, NC 27573.
